Foreword

As President of the Geraldton Windsurf Club, I would like to invite you to an opportunity to participate in this great event.

Each year more than 5000 watersport tourists come to Geraldton to enjoy our unique conditions. Whether they come from Perth, the East Coast or even as far as United States and Europe, they arrive en masse in the summer months and transform Geraldton into a lively tourist town.

Experience tells us that most of these tourists come to spend their holiday between December and February, although the best Watersport conditions with heaps of swell and wind are usually found in September, October and April.

To create awareness that Geraldton is the Windiest place in the World from early September to late April, the Geraldton Windsurf Club committee has decided to host a windsurf event to kick start the watersport season. Eventually we hope that this event grows to become the biggest extreme watersport event in Australia, and incorporates events of the Professional Windsurf Association Circuit as well as the World Kite Surfing Circuit.

This is our opportunity to capitalize on the true potential of watersport tourism in and around Geraldton.

Geraldton Windsurf Club

The Geraldton Windsurf Club (GWC) aims to promote the sports of Wind and Kite Surfing, and also to project a positive image of Geraldton as the Wind Sports Capital of Australia. The committee of the GWC decided to put Geraldton on the map when it comes to watersports. Geraldton is ideally located to take advantage of this tourism opportunity.

A major Windsurf competition is being planned for November this year, and the GWC hopes to enlist the support of local businesses to broaden the event into something for the whole community. This event is listed on the Western Australian Windsurf Competition circuit guide.

We believe that with proper promotion this event can attract tourists to Geraldton en masse, and it is our experience that many wind sporting visitors to Geraldton return year after year to enjoy the unique sailing conditions.

Last year we have received a lot of positive reactions from the business community, councils and tourist organizations who can appreciate what the event will do for local and interstate tourism.

To successfully organize an event of this scale, we still need to attract a major event sponsor. In return for their financial commitment, our major sponsor will be in the position to reach a target audience of adventure orientated tourists from home and abroad.

Please find enclosed our proposed event program, budget and sponsorship information. If you have any questions please call Mick on 99653552 or E-mail Lcfp@bigpond.com .
