Hot Spots

Some of the great windsurfing places in our region.

LOCAL TOWN BEACHES

Geraldton - Point Moore - Hells Gates

Point Moore - Centre of Our World!!Point Moore is located at the western end of Geraldton and it's main feature is the classic lighthouse towering over the point. It's a wicked spot that attracts windsurfers from around the world. The Point is the windiest location in Geraldton as it is situated at the end of a land mass that juts 4 kilometres out to sea and therefore receives the wind first. It is perfect in the mornings for beginners with the late morning and afternoon providing the right conditions for intermediate and advanced windsurfing.
Hells Gates is located about 1 km further out. This spot can get VERY rough with VERY big waves and is only for the experienced board rider who is looking for adventure, excitement and the thrill of a life time!!
A grassed area for rigging sets this up as one of Geraldton's best local areas. SailWest is located opposite the car park. Toilets and showers are located at the carpark.

Geraldton -St Georges Beach

It is mainly used by locals in winter when the wind comes from the North. In summer it is mainly used by slalom boards. A nice grassed area with a very short 5 metre walk to the beach. Toilets and showers are located near the car park.

Geraldton - Sunset Beach

Located at the mouth of the Chapman River right next to Suncity Tourist Park. This is world class sailing but it needs a good swell. Works best in the early and late part of the season. At other times it can be gusty.

Geraldton - Separation Point.

A reasonable beach with a small break 100m from the shore. It is not used by many of the locals but visitors who used to stay at the caravan park opposite the beach often rig up at Separation Point and sail the 2 kilometres to Point Moore for the day. Now the Caravan Park is gone and a new Marine Research and Aquaculture facility is to be built there.

Coronation Beach

When windsurfers talk about sailing in Geraldton they are talking about Coronation Beach. Invariably it is compared with other great wind surfing locations in the world, but without doubt everyone agrees that Coronation is better!
Located 25kms north of Geraldton and then 8 km off the highway, Coro's is a sailing location that everyone can enjoy. The beach is perfectly formed to give you 200m of water as flat as a dance floor on the inside and then a great run through the surf that gets bigger the further you head out the back. Coronation is best known for its jumping and its not unusual to get 6 or 7 jumps on the way out without going off the plane.
As the day goes on the wind gets better for wave riding and best of all the wind is stable. We recommend you take a 4.2, 4.7 and a 5.2.
A small caravan/snack bar operates during the season, but it is wise to take food and drinks with you. No water or firewood is available so please take your own. There is a camping area behind the carpark but the surrounding vegetation and foredune area is fragile so please respect it and heed the signs, they are there for a reason!

Kalbarri

About 160 kilometres North of Geraldton the tourist Mecca of Kalbarri offers some fairly good flat water sailing in the river mouth of the Murchison river. You'll need to allow yourself a good day or an overnight trip. Plenty of other tourist related activities to see and do while you are there.

Shark Bay and Monkey Mia

Approximately 400 kilometres north of Geraldton. Shark Bay offers excellent high wind, flat water sailing both off the beach at Monkey Mia or at Little Lagoon. Worth the trip just to see the dolphins at Monkey Mia.Sign at Gnaraloo Station

Gnaraloo

Seven hours drive north of Geraldton. One of the top wave sailing spots in the world between October and December!! You must sail here at least once in your life. It is also one of Australia's best surfing breaks from May to August.
YOU MUST TAKE YOUR OWN WATER, FOOD AND PETROL. You are two hours by a rough gravel road to the nearest town.
